Free Severed Fifth Album Released

The Free album by Ubuntu's community manager has been released -- I'm grabbing it through bittorrent now.

From the download page:

Denied By Reign

Severed Fifth's debut album is finally released. Eight tracks of pounding metal, grinding guitars and machine-gun double bass drumming, sealed with a ripping vocal performance. The album was written, performed, recorded and produced entirely by Jono Bacon. Denied By Reign was mastered by Paul Wilkinson.

This album is free. It is released under a Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike license which means that you can share, copy, remix, mash-upand sell Denied By Reign, just make sure you give credit to Severed Fifth. For more help about what you can do with Denied By Reign and other Severed Fifth content, see the Licensing Page.

Zarafa: Exchange for the rest of us that like freedom.

Just wanted to write a quick update about a great piece of software I found: Zarafa.

Zarafa is an open-source groupware server; it handles e-mail, calendaring, contact, and task syncing (e.g., just like Exchange for Microsoft® Outlook). It also has a spectacular AJAX web interface (a clone of Outlook Web Access, to give credit where it's due) and support for Exchange Activesync -- that means that mobile devices get the push-style data sync as well!

The setup of the software is simple without sacrificing flexibility. They have packages built for the major distros (including my platform of choice, Ubuntu); and the installation went (on Ubuntu at least) works flawlessly.

The only (significant) limitation of the open source version of Zarafa is that it's limited to 3 Outlook users (it supports an unlimited number of regular e-mail clients). Given the excellent web client (right click AJAX goodness and all that), this isn't too significant. For deployments where it is important, their licensing options are less than half that of Exchange; per user licenses start at only 30 euros annually.

All in all, Zarafa is the perfect, simple upgrade for a linux mailserver.

Backgrounding iPhone Apps

(Disclaimer: This is likely of no interest to anyone.)

The open source Backgrounder app is available now for jailbroken iPhones, and I couldn't recommend it more highly. It is a modification to Springboard (the UI/app launcher for the phone) that allows you to run applications (obtained from the App Store or otherwise) as background processes on the phone. IMHO, this finally brings the feature set of the iPhone to parity with other platforms.

If you can find the Bundle identifier for apps you always want to be able to run in the background, you can specify them in a plist file for Backgrounder you will no longer have to manually enable them. The ones that I have set are:

  • com.pandora
  • com.simplifymedia.mobile.manager
  • com.aol.radio
  • com.Fringland.Fring

These are for Pandora, Simplify Media, AOL Radio, and Fring, respectively.

Just thought I'd share (and archive the information for me).
